Two out of three football fans in stadiums are on their phones
Fully focused on every minute of the game? Fewer and fewer football fans can claim that. Many even use their phones during matches. This is shown by data analyses from mobile provider Vodafone and a representative fan survey conducted in Germany’s 18 Bundesliga stadiums in February 2023.
The hotspot for data usage is the Allianz Arena of FC Bayern Munich. During the 90 minutes of play, each fan used an average of 61.1 megabytes. This is enough to upload around 30 high-quality selfies or send a choreo video. This leaves little time for “maximum concentration” on the match.
Second place in average data consumption per fan went to Hertha BSC Berlin (57 MB), followed by 1. FC Köln (56 MB). Borussia Dortmund ranks far behind in 16th place (32.8 MB). The lowest usage was recorded by VfL Bochum (25.6 MB) and SC Freiburg (25.5 MB).
Two out of three respondents said they mainly use their smartphone to check match updates. Only 27.2% kept their phone in their pocket.
The reasons for the differences in usage between stadiums are open to interpretation. Some fans argue that the excitement at FC Bayern or Hertha matches is simply lower than, for example, in Dortmund’s “Yellow Wall”. What do you think?
